Rashford's Future Uncertain

June 3, 2026 · 09:41 7 min read 9 views
The next phase of Marcus Rashford's complicated relationship with Manchester United may involve a long summer of waiting to discover where he will play next season. A state of uncertainty for a forward expected to start for England is an unusual situation. Yet this is the latest twist in a period of career uncertainty that began when former United head coach Ruben Amorim left Rashford out of his first-team plans in December 2024, with loans at Aston Villa and Barcelona following, and Rashford still searching for a permanent home, possibly in Catalonia, after scoring a crucial free-kick against Real Madrid that helped Barcelona win La Liga last month.

Having generally flourished under Hansi Flick at the Camp Nou, Rashford's preference would be to join Barcelona permanently. He previously stated that if he could choose, he would stay at the club, saying that he would have to wait and see what happens. The issue is that Barcelona's interest in the 28-year-old is unclear. Anthony Gordon's £69m arrival from Newcastle has further complicated the situation, given that he is also a left-sided attacker. If Barcelona are interested in Rashford, it appears it would only be on a temporary basis. United, meanwhile, are demanding a £26m permanent fee, as they try to make a profit on a player developed in their academy before his contract expires in May 2028.

The reason for the relatively low price for a player in his prime is linked to Rashford's £17.5m yearly salary, or the £35m remaining on his current contract. United want to offload the cost of his high wage, and if Rashford is loaned again, the recruiting club will have to cover most or all of the cost. As things stand, Barcelona do not seem willing to make any move for Rashford permanent. Rasmus Højlund has joined Napoli from Manchester United in a €44m deal, three years after moving to Old Trafford for £72m. When the €6m loan fee that took the striker to the Italian club last season is factored in, United have made a £29m loss.

What are Rashford's other options? With the caveat that nothing can be ruled out, there appears to be no way back for him at United, despite Amorim's departure and the appointment of Michael Carrick as his permanent successor. The player from Wythenshawe remains unwelcome at United, as far as Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club's minority owner and controller of football policy, and his senior management team are concerned. When Rashford's loan move to Villa ended last summer, his goal was to join a Champions League-qualified club, but not one in London. If this stance has changed, Arsenal could be a potential destination. Mikel Arteta would likely view Rashford as an upgrade on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli as a left-sided attacking option.
